  • July 25th – September 15th: Joseph Loli

  • Joseph Loli (1976 – ) is, until now, the unsung master of geometric abstract fusion. He creates works on various substrats including wood and rice paper using a combination of watercolors, acrylics and ink.

His early works, typified by two in this exhibit Breaking and Planets, were meticulous studies of geometric patterns and flow.

Loli’s fascination with geometrics gave way to a surge of pure abstraction when he traveled to Carmel, CA to visit a childhood friend, the son of artist Georges Rodrigue.

While there he was inspired to paint works in brilliant freestyle colors on rice paper including Carmel California and Big Sur California, both on exhibit at Za Gallery.

Now, his latest work combines media to compose spellbinding confections via intricate collage miniatures that are unmistakably original, beautiful and precise, perhaps the most stunning of which is Wonder.

Loli is the son of retired Professor of Architecture at the University of Louisiana George Loli, and nephew of yet another Joseph Loli, both father and uncle are accomplished impressionist watercolor artists.

With this new series of geometric abstract collages, the younger Loli has clearly staked out a fresh claim on virgin artistic territory.

Loli’s early childhood roots are Cajun having resided in Lafayette, Louisiana until age eleven. He then moved with his mother to Brooklyn, New York where he attended P.S. 104. Later he majored in Classical Studies at New York University. He continues to reside in Bay Ridge Brooklyn.
